Rachid
Karami International Fair Complex is located at the western edge
of Tripoli, the capital of the northern region and the second
largest city in Lebanon.
Throughout
history, the city of Tripoli was famous for its geographical
location. It provides an important link between the shores of
the Mediterranean and the Syrian/Arab interior to the east and
north thus making the city of Tripoli an important trade and
commerce center on a regional, as well as, local level.
Tripoli
has a distinctive historical and cultural heritage. Its famous
castle, built by Raymond De Gilles during the 11th century
crusades, sits on an eastern hill overlooking both the new and
old city as well as the sea to the west. The 13th century
Mamlouk era has left its imprint in the old
markets (sooks) the old mosques, the schools and the trade
centers (Khans), while the many Turkish public baths dispersed
throughout the old city represent the Ottoman influence. It is
interesting
to note that these facilities are, to a great extent, still
preserved, albeit, with few changes and modifications dictated
by the changing times.
Tripoli
is only 80 km from the Capital Beirut and its international
airport. The Koulaiat airport, which is under rehabilitation and
will be soon put to service, is 20 km away while the harbor is
only 2 km to the west and can accommodate commercial and
passenger shipping.
Furthermore,
the city of Tripoli offers its visitors a variety of exciting
fields of interests. In addition to its distinctive
architectural style, there are the marine natural reserves on
the islands off the coast with their unique and varied
ecosystems. The natural reserve of Ehden forest is a mere 30
minutes drive and provides the environmental enthusiast with
different types of trees, animals and rare vegetation. Last but
not least, one should not forget the holy valley of Kannoubine,
a mere 40 minutes drive from the city, which stretches from the
Bchari / Cedar region down to the coast with its unparalleled
beauty and ancient monasteries. Nestling on the top of the hills
in this valley and dating back to hundreds of years.
Sports
fan can enjoy all sorts of aquatic activities in the several
beach resorts along the southern coast of Tripoli. Skiing buffs
can delight themselves on the slopes of the Cedar Mountain with
its famous cedar forest, which is by itself an important
landmark visited by tourists throughout the year.
